The UK economy has bounced back from recession, with stronger-than-expected growth of 0.6 per cent in the first quarter of 2024 - the strongest of all G7 economies.  This momentum will need to be maintained given Britain's wider economic backdrop of frequent downturns and stagnation, with GDP per capita growth down 90 per cent over the past 16 years, the Resolution Foundation on Friday.

The Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) sets monetary policy to meet the 2% inflation target, and in a way that helps to sustain growth and employment.  At its meeting ending on 8 May 2024, the MPC voted by a majority of 7-2 to maintain Bank Rate at 5.25%.
