ASDA Get Thumbs Down For Pennyland Farm Site In Thurso

23rd January 2008

The Highland Council has this week received a note of the Scottish Ministers' decisions on two significant planning applications for retail outlets in Thurso.

One was an application by Miller Developments for planning permission for a proposed foodstore at the Auction Mart Site, Ormlie Road, Thurso, which had been called in by Ministers following an appeal against non-determination (deemed refusal) of the application.

The other was the application by Asda Stores Ltd for planning permission for a proposed foodstore at Pennyland Farm, Thurso, which had initially been refused at Area level but had received the backing of the Headquarters Planning Committee at a meeting in Inverness in September 2006.

Scottish Ministers upheld the appeal by Miller Developments Ltd, granting outline planning permission for the erection of a retail unit and associated works at Thurso Auction Mart, Ormlie Road, Thurso. However, they refused to grant outline planning permission for the proposed retail foodstore at Pennyland Farm, Thurso.

These decisions were made by Ministers following their consideration of a report from Reporter, Mrs Jill Moody, prepared following a three week long conjoined public local inquiry held in Thurso in August 2007.
