Gaelic careers event shows where language can take you

23rd October 2014

Siuthad! Invites S2 and S3 students to hear about Gaelic careers.

Up to 300 Highland pupils are expected to attend an event designed to inform young people about career options they could pursue using their Gaelic skills.

Siuthad! will bring together a wide range of organisations including the BBC, MG Alba, Feisean nan Gaidheal and Sabhal Mor Ostaig.

Representatives from several industry sectors such as education, television, arts, music, childcare, film, radio, translation and drama will be offering interactive and fun activities for the young people to get involved in.

Alasdair Allan, Minister for Learning, Science and Scotland's Languages will also be there to address the S2 and S3 pupils.

He said: "I have gained so much from speaking Gaelic and meeting so many of the gifted and passionate speakers across Scotland who are helping more and more people realise its benefit. We are in an incredibly positive place with so many opportunities to learn and use Gaelic as communities, organisations and individuals embrace the language.

"There are now many more jobs demanding Gaelic speakers in a range of professions. Earlier this month I had the honour of presenting the Gaelic Ambassador award to BBC presenter Kirsteen Macdonald who learned the language at school and I hope that this event will highlight the extra advantage Gaelic speakers have and encourage pupils to follow in Kirsteen's footsteps."

Derek Mackenzie, Gaelic Development Officer at Skills Development Scotland, added: "Gaelic can open doors to a variety of different jobs and is definitely a skill that is attractive to potential employers.

"As Scotland's Gaelic community continues to grow, so does the demand for workers who speak the language and this is a great chance for young people to find out more about these options in a fun, relaxed and interactive setting."

The careers event is jointly run and funded by Skills Development Scotland (SDS), Highland Council, Highlands & Islands Enterprise and Bord Na Gaidhlig with help from Dynam, a creative design and events agency.

It takes place on 31st October 2014 from 10.30am at Eden Court in Inverness.
