DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highlands Marts Ltd, (September, 8th) sold 4,229 ewe lambs and gimmers at the Highland Mule Breeders Association annual show and sale.
The gimmer judge, Mr L. Gunn, Caithness Livestock Breeders, Thurso, awarded the Challenge cup for best pen of Mule gimmers to Messrs G. & E. McKilligan, Coxton, Cornhill, which realised £180 to Messrs W. Ronaldson & Sons, Westerseat, Wick. The ewe lamb judge, Mr G. Mathers, Sandford Farm, Brechin, awarded the Secretary's cup to a pen from Mr W. G. Macpherson, Blackford Farm, Croy, which realised £150 to Messrs B. & S. Thomson, Brechins, South Ronaldsay.
Highland Mule gimmers (976) averaged £160.06 (+ £8.27 on the corresponding sale of last year) and sold to £185 gross from Croftdhu, Tomatin.
Other breeds of gimmers (36) averaged £121.94 and sold to £160 gross for Cheviot Mules from Croftdhu.
Highland Mule ewe lambs (3,207) averaged £110.02 (+ £11.65 on the year) and sold to £150 gross twice from Blackford Farm, Croy and Milton Farm, Aberarder.
Other breeds of ewe lambs (10) averaged £103 and sold to £105 gross for Cheviot Mules from Glebe of Deisher, Boat of Garten.
