Camster Wind Farm Has Begun Production

1st July 2014

Eon has switched on the 50MW Camster wind farm in Caithness, Scotland.

The wind farm lies between Lybster and Watten and has 25 Vestas V80 turbines.

Consent was granted in 2009 and Eon said it worked had hard to appoint local companies as much as possible throughout the construction process.

Eon chief operating officer Michael Lewis said, "I'm delighted to officially open Camster. This site has the potential to save around 55,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide over its lifetime and will provide around £3.7m through community funding."

Eon project manager for Camster Dean Guy said, "After around 240,000 man hours and several years in planning and construction, it is fantastic to finally open Camster."

The principle contractor for the works completed were given to Morrison Construction based in Inverness, forestry removal to Scottish Woodland, aggregates supplied from a local quarry in Caithness operated by John Gunn & Sons and wherever possible local sub-contractors have been used for the smaller packages of work.

The Camster wind farm will provide electricity equivalent to about 35,000 homes.

The wind farm will also contribute to Scottish Government Renewable Energy Targets (31% by 2011, 50% by 2020).

The wind farm also provides a community benefit fund over the lifetime of the project.
