Camera Inside Dounreay Reactor After Fifty Years

A camera has delved into the depths of Dounreay’s famous dome and captured the first footage for over fifty years of Britain’s first Fast Breeder Reactor.
Nitrogen cooled digital cameras have been inserted into the reactor and recorded the images of the internal structures and the breeder fuel matrix.
The cameras which are used predominately in the oil industry were manufactured and modified locally in Wick, taking into account the nuclear environment and associated high temperatures.
The images captured by the fuels disposition project team will enable Dounreay to prepare accurate plans for the safe removal of the remaining fuel and ultimately dismantling the reactor.
