Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), in partnership with Business Gateway, invite you to attend a series of half day digital workshops to help you improve your online and IT knowledge.

These free workshops are aimed at anyone who wants to learn more about new technologies and how they can benefit their business or social enterprise.

When: Tuesday 16 and Wednesday 17 April 2013
Where: Burghfield House Hotel , Dornoch
Times: Half-day courses run from 9:30am to 12:30pm and from 1:30pm – 4:30pm
Eligibility: Any business or social enterprise (you can attend as many/ few workshops as you want)

9:30 - 12:30: Build your own website
This workshop is aimed at businesses with little or no website experience, but a desire to start building an online presence. You will find out some of the basics about websites and then get the chance to put the theory into action and build your own site using the free online tool Spanglefish. There will be expert help available during the workshop and you will receive detailed instructions to let you continue to develop your website after the course.

The course includes hands-on experience and laptops will be provided.

13:30 - 16:30: Introduction to Social Media
Social Media has grown significantly in recent years and has become a vital part of the marketing mix.

This workshop will give you an overview of how you can use sites like Facebook, Twitter and Linked In to interact with your customers to promote and grow your business. As well as practical tips on how to start using Social Media for your business, it will also help answer common questions like:

What Social Media sites should you be using?
What kind of Social Media posts get the best response?
How much time/ money does it take to get started?
The course includes hands-on experience and laptops will be provided.

9:30 - 12:30: Improve your Website Performance

If you already have a business website or Facebook page, this workshop will help you:

Understand what customers want from your website
Avoid common mistakes
Improve your search engine ranking to help people find your website
Provide the best information and experience when visitors arrive on your site
Increase sales or enquiries through your website
The course includes hands-on experience and laptops will be provided.

13:30 - 16:30: Accounting for Small Businesses
For any small business, the management of their accounts is key to their operations, from keeping an eye on income and expenditure, to cash flow etc. There are many ways in which IT can help make your accounting more efficient and save you time and money. This course details the key areas where businesses can use IT in their accounting, with hands-on examples, and answers to questions such as:

How can you use IT to manage your business accounts?
What are the benefits of using IT to manage accounts?
What accounting software is available and what can it do for you?
The course includes hands-on experience and laptops will be provided.

New guide to support growers with controlled environment agriculture

A new guide has been published (20 March 2026) to help growers who want to explore the potential for controlled environment agriculture (CEA) in rural and island locations.   CEA is the practice of growing crops in a controlled setting where factors like temperature, light, humidity, and nutrients can be carefully managed for optimal plant growth.

Highlands and Islands entrepreneurs win big at Regional EDGE awards

Following a successful pilot in 2025, Regional EDGE, the regional arm of Scottish EDGE, returned in 2026 to offer entrepreneurs from across the region the chance to pitch for a share of the £100,00 prize fund.  Funds were allocated through a competitive process, which involved pitching to a panel of judges, and delivered in collaboration with Highlands and Island Enterprise (HIE).

New programme to strengthen leadership and growth among women-led businesses

HIE Impact Women will support 30 women leaders from businesses and social enterprises that have an annual turnover of at least £25,000.   Women in leadership roles in businesses across the Highlands and Islands are being encouraged to apply for a fully funded development programme aimed at boosting growth, enhancing leadership capability and building strong support networks across the region.
