School Estate Statistics 2010

Scotland's Chief Statistician today published a range of statistics from a Scottish Government survey of the size, value, condition, capacity and running costs of the school estate in Scotland.

For the first time this year, the publication brings together consistent data on school rebuilds and refurbishments over the last three financial years.

The main findings are:

Over the last three financial years, 2007-08 to 2009-10, a total of 303 schools have been substantially rebuilt or refurbished. 151 of these were funded via Private Finance Initiatives or Non-Profit Distributing models and 152 via direct capital funding
The percentage of pupils on the school roll of schools reported as being in good or satisfactory condition has increased from 61 percent in April 2007 to 82 per cent in April 2010

In April 2010, the suitability of school accommodation was reported for the first time. The suitability of 74 per cent of school accommodation was reported as being good or satisfactory

In September 2009, 12 per cent of primary schools were operating at 90 per cent or more capacity, while 62 per cent of primary schools were operating below 75 per cent capacity. In the secondary sector 32 per cent of schools were operating at 90 per cent or more capacity, with 34 per cent of schools below 75 per cent capacity
The publication will be certified as a National Statistic, early in 2011, when the UK Statistics Authority finalises its assessment of Scottish Education Statistics.
