Search to find most enterprising student in Highlands and Islands
The search to find the most enterprising student in the Highlands and Islands concludes this week at the Shell STEP final in Inverness.   Students will battle it out on Wednesday 12 September at Cowan House - the Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) head office in Inverness.

DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd., (August 30th) sold 8,257 store lambs and four wedders at their annual district sale.   Ewe lambs (1,974) averaged £24.88 and sold to £38 gross for Cheviots from No.

Dingwall Store Lambs Sale - 6 September 2007
DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd., (September, 6th) sold 5,495 store, breeding and feeding sheep.   Charolais cross (65) averaged £35.32 and sold to £41 gross from Achtuie, Drumnadrochit.

Quoybrae Mart Report 3 September 2007
QUOYBRAE, Aberdeen & Northern Marts (3rd September) sold 6,133 Store Lambs at the re-sheduled first combined sale from Dunbeath, Bettyhill, Forsinard and North West Sutherland areas.   Overall average was £29.06 showing a decrease of £2.05 from Dunbeath & Bettyhill areas and a decrease of £1.24 on all other areas from last year.

Dingwall Prime Sale
DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd., (September, 5th) sold 32 prime cattle and 405 prime sheep.   Prime bullocks (15) averaged 128.5p (+4.4p) and sold to 139p per kg for a 640kg Charolais cross from Balchraggan, Dores, and £897.60 gross for a 660kg Charolais cross from Udale, Poyntzfield, both to John M Munro Ltd., Dingwall.

Female Resignations Hit New High Despite Rapid Promotion And Bonus Payouts In Scotland
Female resignation rates have hit a new high in Scotland, despite women achieving promotion at a quicker rate than men.   Figures, from a survey of 42,205 individuals, also show that female pay rises have stalled for the first time in more than a decade.

First Ward Forum Meeting For Wick - 11 September from 7.00 pm - 9.00 pm
The first Ward Forum for The Highland Council electoral ward of Wick will take place in the Norseman Hotel, Wick on Tuesday 11 September from 7.00 pm - 9.00 pm.   The meeting will be held in public and there will be a 20 minute session at the close of the meeting for the public to ask questions.

Energy Minister, Malcolm Wicks and David Cairns, MP, Minister of State at the Scotland Office will travel north to attend the Caithness Conference.   The conference to be held on 14th September 2007 will identify the actions needed to grow existing or attract new business to the area to offset the impact of the reduction of jobs at Dounreay as the decommissioning progresses.

Young drivers urged to take up Pass Plus Scheme
An extra 295 young drivers will get the chance to take advanced driving instruction through the Highland Wellbeing Alliance's Pass Plus Scheme this year, thanks to a £40,000 funding boost from The Highland Council's Community Safety Unit.  This extra 295 places bring the total of Pass Plus Scheme opportunities to 644 young people throughout the Highlands and gives them the added offer of cheaper motor insurance; improved driving skills; and more confidence if they successfully complete the scheme.

Tourist Board Training is organising a series of niche market workshops, which are also linked to VisitScotland Quality Assurance Welcome Schemes.   Each course looks at the particular needs of a specialist market and identifies how tourism and individual businesses can benefit from meeting those needs.

The Northern WoodHeat/North Sea Bioenergy Closing Conference will take place on 4-5th September at Strathpeffer Pavilion, Strathpeffer The Project: Northern WoodHeat is a project funded by the EU Northern Periphery Programme and includes partners from Scotland, Finland and Iceland.  Northern WoodHeat aims were to set up small and medium scale woodfuel supply chains optimising benefits to local communities and the environment.

Council on Line to meet Energy Management Targets
Energy management measures are beginning to pay dividends for The Highland Council and further investments are proposed to meet targets set by the Council's Administration to reduce energy use and carbon emissions by 15% and increase renewable energy sources by a minimum of 4,000 kw by 2010.   The Highland Council's Resources Committee was told this week that at the end of the first year of the Council's energy management performance plan, an overall decrease in energy consumption of 16% was achieved and almost £1 million of costs avoided.

Meeting Demand for Building Warrants
To help meet the increasing demand for building warrants and completion certificates, The Highland Council's Resources Committee has agreed to create three additional posts of building standards officer.   The new staff will be based in the Council's offices at Dingwall, Fort William and Kingussie.
